Management Training & Sales Manager Training

Management Training is the preparation of people to assume a position in an organization where they will be supervising other people or it is designed to improve their skills. The effort can range from educating people who have never studied management or have never been in the role of a manager or supervisor, to advanced programs for those who have degrees in the subject and/or years of experience.

The short description of Management is “Getting things done through other people”. In other words, the manager is not the person making the product or delivering the service, but rather the person who is responsible for organizing, directing, and evaluating the effort. Ones success as a manager largely, if not entirely, depends on the accomplishments of the people they supervise.

Many managers receive their training in schools where they earn bachelors, masters, or doctoral degrees. This training is rarely complete until put to the test on the job. One needs to apply the learning to a real environment. Another way managers are trained is through their employer. This can be accomplished by attending conferences, seminars, and workshops outside the organization, through company hosted and delivered courses, or through a mentoring program.

Subjects often included in preparation for a Management position are:

  • Communication Skills
  • Motivation
  • Leadership
  • Interviewing
  • Coaching/Training
  • Evaluating
  • Discipline
  • Finance

Depending on the organization and its needs, there could be many other subjects that could be included such as Time Management, Project Management, Systems Analysis, Marketing, Advertising, Economics, Labor Relations, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Change Management, and Team Building.

Management is referred to as both an art as well as a science and while there are defined skills, and proven strategies, success often relies on interpersonal relationships, personality traits, and intuition. Having one set of characteristics without the other makes mastery of the field a huge challenge. While new concepts in management rarely surface, there is a constant barrage of new ways of explaining or applying existing concepts. Every era has a shifting set of values and requires a fresh approach. Continuing education is a must for career managers.
